Itchy Fabrics and Annoying Labels – Cut them off now! Have you heard this before?

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many children have sensitive skin and are much more aware of how their clothes feel than we might realise.

One of the first things my daughter would ask me to do with a new outfit? Cut off the labels! And when it came to lace, mesh or anything that felt a little itchy, those outfits would often end up unworn.

For little ones like mine, even a tiny neck tag or side label can be surprisingly distracting. What seems like a small detail to us can lead to constant scratching, adjusting, complaints, refusing to get dressed or even distress during transitions.

Why are they so uncomfortable?

This is mainly due to labels being made of synthetic twirls or satin and stiff printed with embroidery that is directly sewn on the neck as it becomes easily identifiable creating a rigid edge that causes friction and rubs the skin. In addition to this many countries ask for additional labels based on specifications which again get sewed on with the original label making it bulky and adding to the irritation.

Removing labels can help, but leftover stitching or rough edges may still irritate the skin if the tag is not fully removed.

Some children get short-term relief by reducing friction and turning clothes inside out, especially when label irritation on kid's clothes is made worse by tight necklines or rough fabric.

How to make dressing easier for your little one and you?

  1. Choose clothing with print on labels -

Printed labels are a great alternative to traditional twirl tags. With no extra fabric edges sticking out, they offer a smoother, gentler feel against the skin.

  1. Choose clothing made of natural or purely organic fabrics –

While we know it's not 100% possible but being conscious of the fabric helps as brands that focus on 100% organic or natural dyed clothing are also carefully about the labels and either use print on or only gentle cotton twill. This gives it a natural finish and makes it more comfortable for your little one.

  1. Pay attention to the stitching-

If you see large stiches or plastic based stitching, run far away!!

Look for fine, soft stitching and smooth seams. Avoid bulky threads, stiff edges or labels that lift away from the fabric and rub against the skin.

  1. Test it before you buy it! -

if you're unsure about a garment, gently run your fingers over the label and its seams. If it feels rough or scratchy to your fingertips, imagine how it might feel against your little one's neck throughout the day.

Why we care about the little details

An itchy label might seem like a small thing, but when your child has to wear that outfit for hours, it can make a real difference to their comfort and happiness.

Real Tickle Tickle was created with our own little ones at heart, which is why we've paid attention to the details that matter most to everyday comfort.

  • 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton.
